General Information About Pomeranian's
Pomeranian's
The Pomeranian breed originated in Central Europe, and is descended from the larger Spitz dogs. The Pomeranian breed is considered toy in size and usually ranges between 5-7 pounds. The Pomeranians fur is a double coat, and needs frequent brushing at grooming. Pomeranian's have a life expectancy of 15 years. Originally Pomeranian's weighed an average of 30 pounds but were bred down in size by Queen Victoria in 1888. At times when breeding certain poms can represent their ancestor poms in size and temperament this is called the throughback gene and can be random. The appearance of Merle Pomeranian's are new to the breed, and breeding Merle to Merle has shown to produce many health problems if a puppy receives double Merle Genes one from each parent.
Temperament
Pomeranians are very loyal intelligent and eager to learn dogs. Poms are very active and need daily exercise or they can become restless, but if not shown who is the boss they can develop human induced behaviors where they think that they are the pack leader over their owners., making them very demanding and attention seeking.
Pomeranian Weight and Size
Toy Pom's
The starndard Pomeranian adult weighs between 5-7 pounds and is considered a toy in size.
Small "Teacup" Pom's
The small "teacup" Pomeranian is under 5 pounds as an adult. Smaller puppies whether poms or other breeds are at a greater risk for health problems .
Throughback Pom's
Throughback pom's are larger than the standard size as adults without being over weight, and are considered to have the throughback gene .
What is the throughback Gene?
the throughback gene is a gene that can be passed down from the Pomeranian ancestors who were Spitz dogs that weighed around 30 pounds. The term is applied to a Pomeranian who has the appearance, and at times the behaviors of their larger spitz ancestors. There is nothing wrong with Throughback poms, and some people prefer bigger poms since they are less likely to develop health issues.
Puppy Uglies
Although Poms are born with natural and beautiful coats of fur, they do start to loose their puppy fur around 4-8 months old and start to grow in their thicker longer adult coats which is usually present by 10-14 months. During this period your pom may look awkward and "Ugly" but it will not last for long. But if you pom is loosing mass amounts of fur to the point that you can see raw skin it may be a different situation entirely especially if there not at the puppy ugly age frame.
